How to Print a Plastic Spiral Binding

Plastic spiral binding, or plastic coil binding, is a process of weaving together a multi-page document with a piece of plastic through a series of tight perforations. Coil binding machines are used to punch holes in paper and insert plastic binding coils. These machines are relatively easy to use, as long as you set them up correctly for the document size you need to bind. Give a professionally upgraded look to school projects, family photo albums or reports and presentations with spiral binding.
Buy a coil binding machine. Choose a machine that is suitable for the amount of staples you do regularly. The machine can hold 25 to 125 pages at a time. If you're using this machine for home projects, you'll only need a smaller machine. Small businesses that regularly bind reports and other documents may choose to invest in larger machines.
Leave appropriate margins on document pages before printing. Standard helical coils require a 1 to 1 1/2" margin, with a 1/2" margin on the left side of the paper. If your print is too close to the edge of the paper, you risk getting pierced by holes and loops in the paper.
Gather your documentation pages together. Don't forget to include the front and back covers. Double check that all pages are in the correct order and turn them in the right direction.
Punch holes in the paper with a reel. If your machine can hold 25 sheets at a time, you can only insert 20 sheets at a time for punching. A general rule of thumb is to punch no more than 80% of your machine's page capacity at a time. This will help your machine last longer.
After punching, double check that all pages are in the correct order and facing correctly. Also make sure all the pages are aligned with each other before proceeding to insert the plastic spiral coil binding.
Rotating coil binding through perforations in the document. You may need to manually pass the coil through the first three or four holes. The machine's coil inserter should be able to take over and complete the binding.
Use a pair of coil crimping pliers to crimp both ends of the coil tie. In most cases, these pliers can be purchased from the same company that purchased the screw binder. Curl removes any excess binding from the document and helps prevent binding from loosening.
